Walpurgis event

...well maybe just a reason for having a party. Anyways dozens of Swedes gathered at the event place in Culver city and enjoyed an open bar sponsored by ABSOLUT & Heineken, some great "Italian like" appetizers by Food Perfected and musica á la Jamie Meyer. However, a nice event where I got to mix some drinks, good company and delicious food.

Somehow everything ended up in the catering company's kitchen for me and Mikaela. D made a cream bun (semla) to me (with chocolate mousse) and then I had some Bacardi topped with Cardamom. Mmm! Crazy but fun! Hopefully they can hire me as a bartender for some event during the summer. Probably I will do a refresher class to improve my bartending skills at the same time Mikaela goes to the school.

In the early morning hours we got a ride to Santa Monica where we waited for the bus next to a weed smoking homeless (we didn't even know if the bus operated at that time) but finally there came a bus and we went to Ralphs to buy some treats (where everyone started to talk with us again) and walked home. Even though it was late and I had to get up pretty early the next morning we started to watch "The holiday" :-) Soo nice!

The environment of Hermosa

Pissed off

Felt like a f*ckin maid yesterday. I love my realtionship to my hostmum J anyways. It wasn't her or the dad's fault, nor D's. There are just a couple of girls which needs to grow up here and not be so selfish. I'm sure J will work this out :-) Maybe some punishment would be suitable.

Enjoy your day!

Astrid Lindgren movies

I was home with D all Monday then she was "sick" even though we were jogging, she was playing and so on we most sat in front of my computer. We watched movies, Swedish movies. Astrid Lindgren movies. Soo nice. "Pippi på de sju haven", "Madicken", "Lotta åker till landet", "Pippi firar jul" and "Pippi letar spunk". All in Swedish and D loves it. We also saw The Lion King but in English - best soundtrack ever. Such beautiful and soo sad.

"Roadtrip" down to OC

I know, I know - it's not really a roadtrip if you measure in the Californian way. But everytime I've been down there I've been taking the train. Anyways I went there with Jennifer and her supersaving car. That car must go on drugs or whatever because it doesn't use the gasoline it has. So for driving all weekend it cost us $33 compared to a train roundtrip ticket for $30 (ONE person). Such a great deal. Anyways we started with a crazy night in Irvine, then a crazy morning drive to Newport, then Soupplantation in Laguna Niguel, then Laguna beach, then Newport and finally a jacuzzi night in Hannas casa á la Ladera Ranch. We were a kind of tired after that so we went to bed early. The next day (Sunday) we went to San Clemente and walked on the very nice beach and pier, had a lunch at a Mexican, more fine, restaurant until we headed Spectrum - the absolute best mall I've been to. So impressed, understand that Irvine people hang out there. Later on we went back to Hanna's house and then headed Los Angeles again.

When I came in through the door I became faced of the whole Havurah' who was at our house for the Second Passover night Seder, sitting and having dinner, reading from the Torah (like the old part of the Bibel). A little bit of too much so I appreciated my sweetie D who run and helped me to carry all my stuff into my room. I mean then I could stay there until I felt calmed down :-) A very nice dinner with so much chocolate desserts that I'm on diet now :-)

Todai - Sushi & Seafood

I've mentioned it before, but it is the greatest sushi experience I own. Before you go there you're really looking forward to it, when you are there you really enjoy and afterwards you are satisfied feeling very happy. You don't really need to eat any other food that day...you can I kind of like make a brunch-dinner thing..

Soo good and so good for you!

Go there with someone you want to hang out with for a couple of hours and eat slowly :) I went there with Ida who originally showed me the place - so nice to meet her again!

Week of rest and cooking

As you've probably noticed I was pretty "off" last week. That was because I was sick, needed to rest and stayed home almost all days. Anyways I couldn't JUST wander around so I made two great dinners. One with a special quinoasallad (blackbeans, parsley, mint, tomatoes etc) and another dinner with Jugoslavian meatballs, couscous and vegetables. Then I went to my favorite Bangkok café ;-) where I ate Prik King Chicken, a very good dish! I can also mention that on Wilshire blvd (close to the intersection with Cochran) there is a restaurant called Indias Oven with a great lunchbuffé for the one who's hungry, wants som 5-star food and a fancy interior. It's $8.95 + tax & tip.

Update will come - I promise

I've been away for the weekend and last week was a kind of chill, but there is still things I want to share. It's just that I'm so tired right now with a bad head ache. I love getting comments. Feels like people still breath.

Great news

It's still too bad that Hanna is leaving - but at least there is something else I can look forward to. LINN IS COMING - her tickets are booked and payed. So let's plan a "road trip" all around the country :-)

Santa Barbara-San Francisco-Sacramento-Seattle-Chicago-Boston-NY-Washington-Atlanta-Miami and a lot between...will be crazy!

See ya guys!

Bad news

I have to believe in miracles! Hanna brought up something very sad yesterday. She didn't get her VISA extended and has to leave the country by May 4th, two months earlier than she had planned to. Shoot, shoot, SHOOT. I will miss her soo much! Even though I guess I can go to OC anyways is not the same thing to be there without Hanna. Hanna=OC for me, that will say OC means Hanna. Where am I going to stay which is as good as Hanna's nice room where you open your eyes in the mornings looking at a gorgeous pool, who is suitable to talk about crappy things walking on Laguna beach (totally blind for all good looking guys flirting with you). Who is now going to teach me how to surf. Is there anyone who has such a mini-cab as Hanna, who shops as Hanna, who eats the same stuff? Anyone in California who grew up with me? Hey this doesn't work. I want you to stay. I will miss the walks with the dogs, miss U and the kids, all the hanging out with you and Evelina. We can't make up a late night in a crowded car, heading Huntington beach singing "We ARE living in America and we're not sorry", getting wasted together. Well well. It will be 3 weekends with you hereafter I guess. OC, Malibu, OC?

At least you'll be home planning a welcome party for when I'm coming home! And a work etc etc ;-)

Host family back

After four days away they're finally back - actually it was nice to have them back and I got to plan almost all summer with my host mum. It's almost no time left until my last day in the beginning of August. We also came up with a great idea about going to Yosemite in the first week of July (host mum J, D and I). I will be full booked every weekend from now. OC, Walpurgis celebration, Au-pair meeting, Malibu, OC again, Tijuana, Host family picnic, Las Vegas, Grand canyon, Hawaii, Week with just M & S (almost like off), Yosemite national park, Beach x 1000, hiking (Griffith park, Ranyon Cañon, Beverly Hills, Topanga), La Jolla, Universals, warm evenings off, working out at my gym, running in Pan pacific, go out with all Swedes (and you too Tammy), see what happens with Emma, swimming in the pool at Pan Pacific, meet even more new people, parties in OC, Catalina island (hopefully) and so on...even Midsummer is somewhere between.

BUSY BUSY SOFIA.

Hermosa beach

Well I went to Hermosa today - all after my wishes. A really nice beach between Manhattan & Redondo beach. Very hot though. You couldn't even walk barefoot on the sand. Afterwards we went for some sushi in Westwood and thereafter some Pinkberry on Beverly drive in Beverly hills combined with some Beverly hills touring for Jennifer. It's crazy how well Tamara and I know LA now. When Jennifer had no idea of where she was we felt like home.

OMG! AREA

Yesterday six hot Swedish chicks had a pre-party at Saharan hotel (more motel style - for the better). I guess that sometimes I just can't other than love being a Swede. So around 10.45pm we caught a cab and headed AREA. I'm not sure if everybody knows about AREA but for the one's who don't it is a famous, high status nightclub in West Hollywood. For example Paris Hilton had her b-party there a couple of months ago. So to get in there is a different experience for different people. Some people have to be pleased if they get in at all, others if they don't have to stand in line all night and for us Swedes, we get worried if they don't wawe us in the same moment we arrive. And we don't count on paying any coverage. So yesterday when we came there we had to wait about 5 minutes to be let in (Shoot, rolling eyes ;-) )

So how did I experince AREA? Hmm, I would say it's a nightclub like others. It had a very nice interior, nice bar, the latest hits, lots of people (obviously  good looking), smokey and happy cops outside :-) One of them Swedish :-) Anyways I wouldn't mind going there again, I guess I would have a very good time. The absolutely best with the evening though, was my sweeties. All the hot chix. Thanks girls..and thx The Grove's Abercrombie & Fitch models who had some after-party with us :-)  And thanks Tammy for hanging out with me today - Love you (as all american girls says)

OMG I MUST BE THE COOLEST GIRL IN THE WORLD (if someone try to brag you with LA stuff, don't be too impressed - just come here and enjoy it) it's great to be here, but it's not hard to live the fancy life. Also the most common jobs in this area are in the media world. It's just they're jobs, cool for us but not maybe always so special here. However, you learn to appreciate they're work more when you are here. If someone works truly hard with making music or movies I feel so bad to download. It really affects they're income, what they do for living.

NYC=LA=TRUE

I got to know that a while ago, I didn't know what to say. Here's the story:

Since months and months I have known that my hostparents are going to NYC for a wedding (a whole week in the end of May). Anyways we have been arguing about how to manage the kids then they need to go to school (can't go with them) and have to stay home. You know, I can't be with them 24/7 when I'm not allowed to work more than 10 hours a day, 45 h a week, have to have 1,5 day off and can't work nighttime. Anyways the plan was that auntie L will be here with me. But know after starting to plan with D what to do and was determined to do this, my commitment was unneccessary. When I talked to them about the wedding last week I got the feeling of that they had missed to tell me something. And there it came - they're going to bring D with them. Not that I wouldn't have minded to even be with her 24/7 but it made me happy that she will get both her parents attention for seven days AND that I will, apparently, have one week off. M & S doesn't need more than a couple of rides... How nice isn't that?

So NYC=LA is truly true - I can really use all days to explore LA even more as long as I cordinate my "taxi driving" with my plans..

Weekend alone? Shoot :-P

Hello there!

Just wanted to update what's going on. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that my hostfamily is going to Grass Valley for a Bat Mitzvah. I decided to stay home, wishing I could have like a Swedish girls dinner with tacos in our way and so on. Is that going to happen? Probably not :-( They're still going there (today) but it seems like hostparents in LA generally always mess everything up, I thought nothing could "ruin" this weekend but obviously it could. My hostmum has Offered the house for a whole big family which are flying here from Kansas tomorrow night and will stay here ALL weekend. Bye bye pre-partys. Well, well the family seems to be nice and then the weather is going to be gorgeous (27 degrees Celcius in the shade Fr, Sa & Su) I will hang out on the beach anyways And I got at least one and a half day off extra :-D

Pictures I found when I googled on Hermosa beach, hopefully I can share the same one's but with me in it after the weekend :-)

How to knock out a cold

Eat and drink combinations of ginger, cinnamon, lemon, mandarine, applecider vinegar, honey drops, honey, herb tea, gurgle your mouth with salt water and of course also with mouthwash. Also drink litres of water and take one Mucinex every 12 hours. If you need to, use a nasal spray three times a day. Choose hot soups for meals. Remember to wash your hand, sleep and get fresh air. Threat yourself with sorbet if you feel bad.

This is my stragedy and it has worked before and seems to work now.

The bad truth exists

.. but sometimes you don't have to focus on it. I don't mean that you should ignore or so, more pick it up, think about it and pack it in your back pack.

So the differences for the bad was:

* The military was in Tijuana because it has been messy
* We saw a police man who beated a guy
* A woman in front of us at the border got hand cluffs for some reason
* The police men were walking around heavy weapon
* We saw lots of prostitutes
* There was kids standing alone on the street begging for money
* They had annoying whistles at the night clubs (maybe it was smart, but I didn't like it)
* The food is completely unhealthy (fat, sugar and dirty water) so that's why many Mexicans has weight issues
* They don't take credit cards at many places, they try to trick you and they want to give change in pesos
* If you pass a "mercado" they most probably say: - Come into my store combined with compliments, very annoying after a while
* They force you to take their help so they can get some tip. For example by giving you directions and so on. There was also this woman we met when we first got there who said the strangest thing. " I have a little second hand store over here, we have free sodas all they but I'm still worth $2 just for showing the store"
* Although we felt safe anytime, everywhere I don't recommend anyone going there neither alone or just a couple of girls, not even a couple of boys and you should have someone with you who speaks Spanish. Our group was perfect. One who spoke Spanish fluently, two with some Spanish skills, another with sense for directions and we looked like to couples. So the guys didn't get bothered of the prostitutes and we girls escaped the "annoying compliments"

Weekend in Mexico

So much argues about: Don't go to Tijuana, it will be the worst you've ever seen, it's dirty, soo poor and of course DANGEROUS. And it's not Mexico. For a while I almost felt like I didn't want to go anymore! Hey guys, once in a while I must disagree and say that a lot of people are mistaken about the whole Tijuana thing.

This is my experience:

We got there by taking the Greyhound bus down to San Diego. Even Greyhound has got bad critics. I have used it both here and on the east coast, I think it's like most other buses, dependent on the traffic, a little stinky toilet and not much room for your legs. But still faster (at least to San Diego) and just $29 roundtrip compared to Amtrak (the train) which is $29 one-way. Anyways you take the bus from the very very (not) nice parts of downtown LA and arrive next to The Plaza in SD. Then we took the Trolley (after some dinner from Ralph's) down to San Ysidro where the border is. Walked over the border and entered a completely different culture. First people we met were either police men or beggars (even kids) but I still felt comfortable. We started to walked to our "hotel" on the very broken streets people yelling after us. I still felt ok. We checked in at the hotel and came in to our room we had for our two nights. Must say that for the approximately $15/per night it was worth the money. Two single beds and an own bathroom with shower, the standard was not high - but neither dirty.

Time to explore Av. Revolucion (the main street). Well this street is probably the one all tourists see. If it's the only place you see in Tijuana I understand that you're disappointed. Even the nightlife is a kind of boring there. Also everything's more expensive. Anyways we spent our first night on that street and although we met some Canadian guys it was quite boring. The whole street was emty. After , dinner at Hard Rock Café, trying some different clubs, drinking and dancing we went back to our hotel where we slept and slept. Awesome!

So the next day (Saturday) we went out to Av Revolucion again and when standing, looking at the tourist map two guys come by. So I ask:

- Where are you from?
- We're from Germany.

All set. We got a very nice, safe and entertaining full day (night) with these guys. We walked out from the tourist area and dived in to the real Tijuana. We ate a vey fancy. nice meal at a Argentinian restaurant. Real Barbeque for the first time since I left home. Delicious! Such a good red wine too. And a lot of attention from the staff then Daniel (one of the guys) had been an exchange student in Argentina and could speak Spanish fluently (impressing btw). Once again, such great food! (Before we left we got some complimentary tequila shots of good quality!) So we kept on wandering around, back to the Av. Revolucion area again. As soon as we got there we all agreed we wanted to get away from there ASAP so Daniel asked one of these trade men where we could go. It's ridicolous, the parallell street just one block west of the main (tourist) street was Constitucion, the main (local) street. Over there it was crowded of all the locals, it was cheap, it was a lot of Mexican sweets, food, clothing etc etc and we didn't get bothered (probably because we were almost like couples).

After the "sightseeing" we all went to our place and while the guys were waiting Tammy and I did a quick make over. Changed some clothes and put some make up and simsalabim we looked ready for fiesta. I saw your faces when we came down the stairs guys ;-) So we went on facing Plaza Fiesta (the place we got to know was the place where the locals went out). Then it seemed like the Mexican days are longer (the time never passed although we had so much fun) I tried to sell my German friends the idea of going to a grocery store. I didn't give up and once we were in the store we all enjoyed it. I love grocery stores - whatever country (even Sweden) I have to go to them. It's so much fun. Always different stuff and once you know the assortment you can start comparing the products for real. So an hour or so, we walked out with Mexican fruits, Tequila and traditional sweet :-D Maybe all of them will carry the concept of a foreign grocery store in the future. Okey okey so we moved on to The Plaza Fiesta. We picked out a place called Beer Garden where we got to sit on a couch drinking some great drinks. Once again we moved over to another little "jail-like" place and after having some real Mexican burritos we went to a club (once again we had a couch). Anyways I guess some of the night is a little bit concealed ;-) A very nice day anyways. Thank you German people!

So the next day without much of sleep we went back a kind of in the same way we came (to pass the border went smoothly, they just confiscated our Mango ;-) ) Once in LA both of us needed to work - but it was a piece of cake, even driving was okey. I felt very attentive. The only bad thing was that I started to feel sick (my throat hurted a lot)..

Ps. Just so you know, Tammy has taken almost all these pictures, she's doing great with her camera. Look at here Death Valley pix here...

Homeless Emma stays at my hotel

A pretty good offer, I do her laundry, serve her cookies, water, she has got parents, three little sisters and a butler. The room is also fully cleaned, the bed comfortable and she can do whatever she wants. Today she got a guided walking tour to the Scandinavian store on Pico blvd where we got "Julmust", "Kexchoklad" and "Ballerinakex". Just about an hour after the purchase AND a soup & sandwich lunch everything was in our tummies. I didn't feel good then I'm usully eating less calories than that on a whole day (in addition to that that was really bad calories). Balanced Sofia feels bad imbalanced.

At least we walked half day and then went to a beauty salon where  Emma got a manicure and I some waxing. So cheap, so worth it! Next time some pedicure for us both, please!

Now Emma's with Emma - miss her already. But she'll be back. I have all of her stuff ;-)

Tomorrow is MEXICO!

She is the real "The devil wears Prada"

image89

Why Emma hasn't left earlier and at the same time had a nightmare - until now is because her hostmum really is her. Meryl Streep's soul mate.

Such a DRAMA

The clock shows 10.37am. Emma, Chio, Ariana and I are having our English class in Santa Monica College. My phone rings. It's Danette. I call her back 10.47am and she wants to talk to Emma. Must be urgent then she's calling my phone, was the only thing I thought.

What she told Emma was that she had to leave the house. Now. She's not allowed to stay there. So why? The reason is that there is some kind of federal law which says that you're not even allowed to be in a host family who has an infant if not qualified? So is she qualified, indirectly yes, but directly no. She doesn't have 200 hours with babies documented. Of course this is not her fault. But anyways, pretend that you're going as an au-pair to The US and when you're already there you get to know that the mum is pregnant. You were not supposed to take care of a baby, didn't expect it. Eight months later you'll become thrown out the house without notice. How would you feel? In this case this was positive. Stronger than any other pain reliefs but still, we felt like no part in the big big whole mess new about this rule.

After some phone calls from an upset hostdad and a hostmum who doesn't even want to talk about it everything was clear. We brought my suitcase, packed all Emmas stuff and now she's here - sitting next to me on her computer. We have like a little cute office and she's finally free. The handcuffs are released.

image88

"Parent trap" and "Pippi Longstocking"

I love these movies and so do D :-) I guess the "Parent trap" (Föräldrafällan) is my favorite movie and how good isn't Lindsay Lohan in that movie?

image87

Chill

Great calm day with a delicious, kind of "fine dining" Indian lunchbuffé on Wilshire blvd with Emma :-) Afterwards we were just lying in the grass dreaming of the wonderful way we grew up in Sweden...

image86

LA Guide

Figured out that I love showing people around. Maybe because I've spent so many hours by learning everything about a place. So that was a kind of what I did with the new super duper sweet Swedish au-pair. She's great! So if you need to find a good restaurant, a place to go shopping or a museum (of any category) ask me. Either I know or I will gladly find out!

image85

My Hawaii plans so far :-)

Okey I will make it official now :-) I'm going between May 28-Jun 4. But who will make me company you will get to know later on... and I need to buy a real "backpack" - if you have some advices I would love you to share them as well as Hawaii facts

May 28th (W)
I will arrive to Honolulu airport during the evening and check-in at Seaside Waikiki hostel, have dinner (Hard Rock Café), "mingla", wander in the closest neighborhood and sleep

image76

May 29th (T)
Pearl Harbor and Waikiki beach the rest of the day (surfing, boogie board, sun bathing, swimming), maybe go on a dinner cruise or make a trip somewhere else on the island

image77

May 30th (F)
I'm going take myself to the North shore/Haleiwa and visit the camp Francisco is working (of course also all the great surfers and the beautiful beaches) Hopefully I may stay overnight at the camp - but we'll see.. at least I might rent a moped for 24 hours so I can drive all around the island and see as much as possible.

May 31st (S)
Some more "sightseeing" on the moped until it's time to fly over to the real "Hawaii island" also called Big Island where I will stay at a cute place called Hedonesia in Pahoa. As I've got it it's right in the jungle.

image80

Jun 1st (S)
Volcanos =) I will see the largest one in the world. I will go to The Black sand beach, go horseback riding and hike. I will live in a hotel located right there!

image81  image82

Jun 2nd (M)
Kailuna Kona probably means more "citylife" - shopping and then dining at Hard Rock Café (my hobby since my 15th birthday is to collect teddybears from there, I'll go over to sth else now but that's another story) I will stay at a place called Koa Wood Hale

Jun 3rd (T)
Last day on Hawaii. I'll return to Waikiki in the evening and stay at Waikiki International

image84

Jun 4th (W)
Early morning, the departure is 7:10AM so I guess I won't have time for anything else but I will enjoy the flight (we'll see if I get a little jetlag, hopefully a positive one)

Addicted to yoga

You have probably noticed that people who are doing yoga have fell in love with and made it to their new lifestyle? I'm one of them, yoga is such an amazing workout especially if you do pilates beside that (a great combination) and a supplementary to all other workout. I'm so flexibel now so I can do both of the splits when one leg is in front and one behind - and soon I will be able to make the one with my legs straight out to the sides :-)

(What) They Wanted

image74

WHAT THEY WANTED

What makes love so complicated in a world where there are few
restrictions and much freedom? Based on the years around 33, just
before you're crucified, this peace is about the fear and longing in
the process of choosing (one) love.

Julia and Jake are friends. They see each other several times a
week or not at all for a few months. It depends how much energy
they have. Their friendship is exhausting. When they do meet the
official reason is usually to borrow a movie. Because she is with
someone else since forever and he is a free-spirited musician,
eternally. They both have great ideas about free will and living
your dream. But the particular dream about them being together,
neither one of them wants to spoil by exposing it to reality. So they
keep playing their game, hurting each other along the way.  Their
relationship has now reached a deadlock and neither one of them
seems capable of solving it, making it an impotent situation. And
that's when things start to happen.

A Spontanious Visit to the Theatre

Every Friday I get a weekly newsletter from SACC (Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce) where I find both news from home and here, advertising for events and other information. This Friday they had an ad concerning a play written by a Swede. It was Saturday night, 10 dollars and seemed to be an enjoying story and pretty close to my place. Caught my interest.

Then Emma and all her friends were in Vegas, Evelina & Hanna in OC, Ida working, Ari with some Mexican friends I tried to reach the new Swedish girl Jennifer. Anyways I didn't get her number in time and decided to go by myself and I'm soo happy I did. After that I walked all they way up to West Hollywood I was welcomed so nicely. Before they play I had already talked to an old reporter who had been travelling all around the world and another nice "younger" man. The old reporter thought even the women in his age was so beautiful in. He told me that he wished he was 60 years younger so he could marry me :-) The play was great, the actor and actress were both very proffesional and the whole relationship it was about felt familiar to me. Afterwards I drank wine and chatted with both the audience, the actor & actress, the owner for the theatre, the writer and the SACC. Oh I didn't want to leave! Although I was (like always where I go) youngest I didn't feel that way. The opposite, they felt a kind of the same age group as me. I got so much compliments and got to hear what a good hand shake I had - over and over again. Made me feel so happy! With all these men who were there I became that charmy little princess I love to be. Sometimes I feel like I don't belong my age group (confirmed by Emma today). I think I don't but it's easier now than it has been for years now. I'm a kind of adult now, people look at me that way and even people in my age are catching up :-)

When I after all decided to leave I went to the bus stop where I got in to a drama between three random guys. Guess this is what people here call dangerous. Not dangerous at all. More fun and I felt very relaxed. The first guy (African-American) is sitting and complaining about his knee, the other guy (white) thinks he's president Bush and can change the drinking law to 17 so I can drink (and he was very upset about the black guys attitude) and the third guy (Indie background) is listening to music at the same time his spitting on the ground and telling us that the land is his. A lovely interesting night I didn't want to end (so I went to Coffebean and Tea leaf for making it last longer and think about the play....)

Morning with D

Then parts of the family went to Kansas for the weekend I had to work Saturday morning. Nothing hard though, watch a movie and go to my favorite Thai restaurant. That was all :-)

Love you D!
